Poem: The Weary Blues
Author: Langston Hughes
This poem is about a man who is playing the blues on a piano for the world to hear. He is trying to put the memories of his troubles behind him and move on with his life. The purpose of him playing the blues is to invoke change in how we live our life; to live it to the fullest and try to be happy. The tone of the poem is very depressing and cold. The writer wants the reader to know that no matter how hard we try to forget our past the memories never go away.

Poem: Harlem
Author: Langston Hughes

This poem is about the Harlem Renaissance (hence the title) and the debate on whether it was good or bad. The purpose of this poem is to make you think, and to inform people on what the Harlem Renaissance was like by comparing it to other things that people use in every day life. The tone of it is questioning. It is trying to open up the eyes of the readers and let them see what some people went through.

Poem- The Cat and the Saxophone (2 am)
Author- Langston Hughes

This poem is about a man in a club that is just a little tipsy. He has decided to hit on a woman close to him (in proximity). In the background a band is playing and the CAPITAL letters are the song that is being sung. The purpose of this poem is to entertain and maybe give a little insight on what club "life" is like. The tone is exciting/funny. Hughes is trying to show us (in my opinion) that men that are drunk in clubs tend to be a little loopy. My advice, avoid them. :]

Poem: The Cat and the Saxaphone

Poem: Morning After
Author: Langston Hughes

The purpose of "Morning After" is to entertain the reader, for most people, (at least I do) find it funny that the drunk man has such a reaction to his partner's snoring. The tone of this poem starts off as one of fright, for he doesn't know what the sound is, but then one of aggrivation towards his partner for waking him up. The theme of this poem, put bluntly, is to not get intoxicated, or if you do get intoxicated, don't sleep with another person.

Poem: We Wear the Mask
Author:Paul Lawrence Dunbar

In this poem the author talks about how his people wear social masks to hide who they truly are. The poem is very dark, and depressing. It tells how him and others have to cover up who they are so they can be accepted by society. However, he also speaks of how they are not done with their journey, saying they still have a long way to go. This, in my opinion, is the best poem in the entire packet.

Poem: Morning After
By: Langston Hughes

This poem is about an unknown man who is drunk and tired and tries to get to sleep but his wife was snoring so loud that he couldn't. He is feeling grumpy, tired and sleepy but he can't sleep with all this snoring. The tone is pretty humorous because it shows how this unknown man loves his wife so much but he just needs her to stop making so much noise. The theme is that no matter how loud the person is or how drunk you are, you will still love them in the morning after some sleep.

Poem: Harlem (2)
Author: Langston Hughes

The plot of "Harlem (2)" is a person wondering what happens to dreams that get delated or dissapear. The tone of this poem is wondering and sad. The person is just wondering what would happen to the dream, but they compare it to a heavy load and a sore which gives it a sad tone. Dreams are suppose to be happy and fun, not something that "stinks like rotten meat". The theme of "Harlem (2)" is that you need to hold on to your dreams. Do not focus on the what ifs if you're dream is deferred, if you follow your dreams and believe in them they will always be there.

The tone is flirty and smooth. This poem was written mainly to be funny but it is also a commentary on the quality of life back then. Alcohol was illegal, so they had to make do with what they had. A lot of people had very hard lives and the only source of pleasure they had was to go to a jazz club and flirt with a pretty girl. They were lucky if they could pay the landlord each month. Times were hard. Drinking, women, and music were sometimes the only things that kept people from going crazy. They were on the brink of insanity, and that is represented in this poem by the two different ways it was written. This poem is about a man who has just gotten home from a night on the town. He is very intoxicated and tired. The purpose of this poem is to entertain and see some normal lifestyle comedic things that happen. The tone of this would be drunken and very drowsy. The theme would be to know what kind of "licker" your putting into your system so you don't get sick.

Poem: The Trupet Player
Author: Langston Hughes
This poem is about a man playing a trumpet to chase away the blues. The purpose was to tell people not to let the blues get them down. The tone of this poem was a lil cold. I think the writer was telling people to not let the past get them down.

This poem is about an African American trumpet player who uses music to move people and express his emotions. The purpose of this poem is to make the readers feel the trumpet player’s sorrow and desire and to invoke change. The tone is mellow and expressive. Poem: The Cat and the Saxophone (2 a.m.)
Author: Langston Hughes
This poem is about a man in a club or bar that has had too much to drink. The drunken man is carelessly and pitifully trying to hit on a woman. The purpose is to entertain the audience, but yet it gives us insight into the lifes of an average club or bar. the tone is light-hearted and up-beat. Theme is one should be cautious when dealing with the bar scene, and that The Harlem Renaissance was a joyful time for some blacks.

Poem: The Cat and the Saxaphone (2 a.m.)
Author: Langston Hughes

The Cat and the Saxaphone (2 a.m.) is a musically oriented poem with double speakers. The inferred setting is at a speakeasy in the Harlem Renaissance time period. This poem is meant to give the reader an idea of the mood of a speakeasy. It has a very upbeat tone, and seems loud and cluttered. It is actually the product of a combination of both a popular jazz ragtime song and a conversation between multiple people. This is shown through the use of multiple conflicting gender statements.

Poem:The Cat and The Saxophone (2 AM)
Author:Langston Hughes
The poem is basically about a man and a woman, meeting each other in a bar. It is a happy conversation, seeing that neither person is angry or offended or anything. It is taking place in a bar where the jazz is playing in the background. The capitol letters are saying what the jazz is saying, and the small letters show the conversation between the "drunk" man and the woman.

Poem: The Cat and the Saxaphone (2 a.m.)

This poem is about a man and a woman at a bar. It is a jazz bar so there is lots of jazz music. The man and the woman are two of the last people at the bar. He keeps hitting on her thinking that he is going to try and get lucky.
